5 Warning Signs Your MRI Chiller Needs Service

If your MRI chiller is starting to act up, the warning signs usually show up well before a full failure — the question is whether anyone catches them in time. Here are five signs that mean it's time to call for service before a small problem becomes a quench.

1. Rising helium boil-off rate

A healthy magnet loses very little helium between fills. If your boil-off rate has been creeping up, that's often the first sign of a struggling cold head or a developing vacuum issue — and it tends to get worse, not better, on its own.

2. Chiller running longer or louder than normal

Compressors that cycle more frequently, run longer than usual, or start making new noises (grinding, knocking, excessive vibration) are telling you something changed. Don't wait for it to get worse.

3. Room or magnet temperature creeping up

If your equipment room feels warmer than it used to, or system temperature readings are trending upward, the chiller may not be pulling the heat load it used to. This is easy to miss if no one's tracking the numbers day to day.

4. Error codes or intermittent alarms

Modern chiller and cryo systems will often throw an early warning code before a hard failure. Intermittent alarms that clear on their own are not "nothing" — they're the system telling you a problem is developing.

5. It's been a while since the last cold head service

Cold heads have a service life. If you can't remember the last time yours was serviced, that alone is a reason to get it checked — waiting for a symptom to show up means waiting for downtime.
